€œOpening Our Mathematical Eyes: Seeing Math in Everything We Do€
The 22nd International Conference of Adults Learning Mathematics (ALM)
Hilton Mark Center | Alexandria, VA | USA
Sunday, July 12, 2015 to Wednesday, July 15, 2015
to submit a presentation: May 20, 2015
Dear Friends and Colleagues,
The American Institutes for Research (AIR, www.air.org) will host the 22nd International Conference of Adults Learning Mathematics (ALM, www.alm-online.net) from July 12€“15, 2015 at the Hilton Alexandria Mark Center in Alexandria, Virginia. The conference is titled €œOpening Our Mathematical Eyes: Seeing Math in Everything We Do€ to draw attention to the role and function of mathematics in all professions and to the varied ways in which people from different cultures conceptualize and use mathematics to solve everyday life problems.
We invite you to submit a proposal to present at the conference. We welcome proposals for presentations on a variety of sessions addressing any specific issues related to the theme of the conference, €œOpening Our Mathematical Eyes,€ including special interest groups related to the following broad topics:
· Adult Numeracy Concepts, Theories, and Practice
· Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM)
· Numeracy and Diversity
· Numeracy and Literacy
· Numeracy and the Workforce
Participants are encouraged to submit any other interesting and innovative ideas related to adult numeracy/mathematics, especially if these ideas relate to the presence of mathematics in all professions and job functions.
How to submit a Presentation: Complete the registration form, and submit your abstract to us no later than May 20, 2015. If you have any questions about the process or have problems submitting your presentation, please contact Anestine Hector-Mason (ahector-mason@air.org). Special discounted rates are offered to ALM Members, Adult Educators, and Students. Please visit the conference website for more information.

Description of Sessions
Paper presentation (45 minutes)
A paper session at the conference is 45 minutes in duration and will allow 30 minutes for presentation of key issues and 15 minutes for discussion. We encourage presenters to be as interactive as possible.
The purpose of the paper may be to:
· Report on a research project
· Discuss a position or theory
· Reflectively critique practice
· Describe a new program
· Review literature
· Mix any of the above activities
Workshop (90 minutes)
A workshop session is 90 minutes in duration and should include some form of interactive participation for all participants such as small group discussion, simulation of learning activities, hands on mathematics/numeracy, or some mixture of these. The purpose of the workshop may be to:
· Demonstrate and model practice
· Discuss issues
· Demonstrate practical implications of research
· Provide opportunity for participants to interact with technology-based teaching strategies/resources
· Any new or innovative approaches not mentioned above
Special Interest Group (SIG) or Colloquium (90 minutes)
This type of session should include one or more presenters or discussants who plan to focus on broad issues related to the core discussion topics listed above. The presentation should target a specific audience (teachers, researchers, policy makers) and have a structured approach to support collaborative exchanges through questions and answers. The abstract should make clear the context and focus and could provide key questions to be addressed.
Poster/Artwork
Facilities will be available to organize a poster display in select locations at the conference venue, and time will be allocated on the program for conference participants to reflect collaboratively around the motif in the posters and artwork. Contributors to this session should indicate the topic to be displayed and the amount of space required. We encourage posters and artwork that reflect the motif of the conference: mathematic eyes: Seeing math in everything we do.
